Did you recently graduate from high school? What about college? These milestones mean your living situation could be changing. Are you moving to start college or a new job? Insurance is probably the last thing on your mind, but it’s essential for protecting yourself. Maybe you received a new car or nice furniture as a gift. Maybe it will be your first time out on your own. Are you ready? Nevin & Witt is here to answer your questions about insurance during this new adventure in your life!
You move out of town to start college. You pack all your things in the car or maybe fly out and buy new belongings. You have this great new apartment or dorm. The building is insured, but perhaps you don’t realize that it’s only insured for the dwelling. Think of your landlord’s insurance policy as a shell; it only covers the building. Your belongings must be insured separately. Maybe you think "I don't need renters insurance," but it’s important!
I had a friend who bought a new MacBook and was making payments on it. One night, someone broke into her apartment while she was gone and stole her laptop. She didn’t have renters insurance. Her laptop was gone; she still had to make the payments, and had nothing to show for it. Laptops, iPods, video game consoles, and TVs are valuable items. If they are stolen, you are out the money, unless you have renters insurance. Even if an item is stolen from your car, it’s covered under renters insurance. Renters insurance also covers fire and water damage as well as damage from falling objects (for more details, visit insurance.ca.gov).
There are two main reasons college students don’t purchase renters insurance. Either they don’t think about it or they think it’s too expensive. But I am here to tell you that it is affordable. Nevin & Witt has an office in Chico, CA which is also home to California State University, Chico. To insure an average apartment in Chico, it would cost around $10-$15 per month. Some of our providers even offer discounts for having both auto and renters insurance.
Maybe you think Renters Insurance is not worth it or “it won’t happen to me,” but the cost is low and you never know. Choose to protect your belongings. Chico is a relatively safe area. The violent crimes rate is lower than the rest of California, but the property crimes rate is higher. Ten or fifteen dollars per month is one or two meals out, a price that could easily be incorporated into your budget. Don’t kick yourself later, call us now! We can provide coverage throughout California.
