Stu, a dentist himself, surely didn’t expect to wake up with a missing tooth.
This is a great lesson about the importance of dental insurance.
Most dental expenses are NOT included in health insurance, unless it’s a medical emergency.
That means you need coverage unless you plan to pay out of pocket for cleanings, exams,
and other procedures. Dental insurance is offered as either a stand-alone plan or an add-on.
The most important thing to note is that you should have dental coverage before you actually need it.
Don’t wait until you get a cavity, need those wisdom teeth out or other problems arise. Be prepared!
There are very often waiting periods with dental insurance, up to three years for major procedures.
As with health insurance, there’s a choice for an HMO or a PPO.
HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) – usually a less expensive plan, but fewer dentists are available.
Through the HMO, there are often discounts available for orthodontics.
PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) – costs more than the HMO plan, but offers more dentists
in the network. For those who want more control over the dentist they go to, this is a good choice.
